Program Overview
Has the modernity and style of Japanese anime ever caught your eye? Can you explain the difference between Buddhism and Shintoism, religions which have existed for over 2500 years? Old and new live side by side in striking contrast everywhere in Japan. Bullet trains speed past ancient Mount Fuji and arrive on schedule to the second in ultra-modern metropolises. Centuries-old traditional dishes are displayed as plastic replicas in restaurant windows. Even your household toilets might have more buttons than your remote control! Experiencing and studying Japanese on Intrax's new Culture+ is the best way to delve into the complexities of Japanese culture.
Our 4-week, accredited academic program is based at Yamasa Institute in the city of Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture. It includes a unique curriculum of Japanese language, history and culture classes intertwined with Intercultural Competence (ICC) activities facilitated by an intercultural communication specialist. Culture+ reinforces in-class learning with carefully chosen opportunities to apply your learning in the field: interacting with rural villagers, hiking through millennia-old cedar forests which flank snow-capped mountains, and hearing lectures in Buddhist shrines and samurai camps.
