Academics
As globalization draws us closer together, it is critical that we understand not only ourselves but also the other cultures and perspectives that influence our society. China has long been a mystery to much of the western world, but it's increasingly important role in our economy demands that the political, business, and academic leaders of tomorrow be prepared to join with China in setting the course for our future. While good intentions are helpful, intercultural skills and common language are the real foundation for successful interactions between people from different cultures.
We've developed a customized curriculum that combines 20 hours of Mandarin language study with 25 hours of Intercultural Competence training (ICC). The Mandarin instruction will focus on the basic language skills needed to interact with locals in everyday situations. The Intercultural Competence portion will include topics such as intercultural communications, cultural self-awareness, ICC in the workplace, and Chinese cultural traditions. The classroom curriculum will be reinforced through service learning projects that will take place during your excursions throughout the country. In each of the projects, you will interact with local people while you learn about aspects of Chinese history or contemporary Chinese society. With 45 total hours of classroom learning, the academic program is designed to earn up to 3 transfer credits at your college or university.
All classes will be held at the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts in Beijing, the only school in China dedicated to traditional Chinese opera. The 2,000 students enrolled here are working towards bachelors or masters degrees with specialties in opera performance, management or education. This will be a great place for you to meet creative students from China and other parts of the world, and learn about a Chinese art form that has been practiced for more than 1,000 years!
